Frequently Asked Questions

Adding a rug to your home's design doesn't have to be overwhelming. These are our most commonly asked questions to help you in your search.

Which comes first: the furniture, the paint, or the rug?
In a perfect world, start your room design with the rug. There are infinite choices in fabrics and paints and a well-chosen handmade rug will outlast most everything else in the room. If you are not starting from scratch, and a rug is being chosen for an existing space with established color and style, carry fabric and paint samples with you. Having a photo of the room is also helpful to understand space and furniture placement when you're in the gallery.

What determines the quality of a rug?
The number of knots per square inch is a commonly used indicator of quality, however it's not the only one.  The weave should be fine enough to clearly express the motifs of the design. The quality of the wool determines the resilience and lasting patina of a rug. The quality and fastness of the dyes are also important.

What determines the price of a handmade rug?
The price of a rug is based on:
1. Quality
2. Country of origin
3. Age
4. Condition
5. Color and style trends

Which country of origin is best?
Among modern rugs, one should look at the "personality" rather than "nationality" of the rug. Traditionally, Iran (Persia) has been the source for the finest of all rugs -- the benchmark against which all others are compared. However, the quality of rugs from India, Pakistan, China, Turkey, Tibet and Nepal has improved in the past 20 years and will have lasting impact in your home.

How do I care for and clean my handmade imported rug?
Regularly vacuum your rug on both sides--start with the top, then flip it over and vacuum the underside.  Turn your rug at least 4 times per year to avoid fading from sunlight and uneven wearing from traffic. To spot clean your rug, gently dab warm water on the area until it is clean. Be sure to dry your rug completely before laying it flat again. If your spill requires something stronger, consult a professional before using any detergent or natural cleanser. If it is a result of a pet, arrange for a professional cleaning immediately. Using detergents can cause colors to run; this could devalue your investment. We recommended that you have your rug professionally cleaned every two to five years.
